David Hare's new political drama Gethsemane will debut at London's National Theatre in November, before heading out on a UK tour. The show will be directed by Howard Davies.
The play is inspired by the 2006 scandal involving Tessa Jowell, a British politician who separated from her husband after he was accused of money laundering and tax fraud. Hare's many plays include The Vertical Hour, Plenty, and The Secret Rapture.
The cast will be headed by Olivier Award winner Tamsin Grieg and feature Anthony Calf, Jessica Riane, Stanley Townsend, and Nicola Walker. The creative team includes Bob Crowley (sets), Fotini Dimou (costumes), Mark Henderson (lighting), and Christopher Shutt (sound).
The National's fall-winter season will also include Jonathan Kent's production of Oedipus, starring Ralph Fiennes and Clare Higgins; Juliette Binoche's dance-theater piece In-I, the UK premiere of Tracy Letts' award-winning drama August: Osage County, a new production of Tom Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, and Samuel Adamson's Mrs. Affleck, a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen's Little Eyolf.
