The Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q celebrated its 2000th performance last night, June 3, at the Golden Theatre. The musical -- which opened on Broadway on July 31, 2003 -- is now the 25th longest running show in Broadway history and the seventh longest-running musical of those currently playing.
Directed by Jason Moore, Avenue Q is a musical about 20-somethings who move to the city with big dreams and tiny bank accounts. It features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and a book by Jeff Whitty based on an original concept by Lopez and Marx. The creative team includes Rick Lyon (puppet design), Stephen Oremus (musical supervision), Ken Roberson (choreography), Anna Louizos (scenic design), Mirena Rada (costume design), Howell Binkley (lighting design), and Acme Sound Partners (sound design).
The show originally played Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre before opening on Broadway. It won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. It has already surpassed the original runs of South Pacific (1,925) and Pippin (1,944). The show is also playing a U.S. national tour and a London engagement in the West End.
